YOUR RESPONSIBILITY
a summary of the responsibilities of all members of the Diocese 

This diocese is committed to love, nurture, protect and treasure every child and young person as a gift from God.

NSW clergy (including locum tenens and ATOs)

  • Complete Attachment 3 & Attachment 4 of the Working with Children Check and return them to the Bishop’s Office.
  • Participate in a Child Protection Workshop once every three years.
  • Report reasonable suspicion of physical or sexual abuse of children and young persons to the NSW Department of Community Services.
  • If you are the rector of a parish it is incumbent upon you and the Church Wardens to make sure that your church has a Child Protection Policy and that you keep the parish members up to date on Child Protection issues and procedures. This should be done at least annually.

NSW Children’s ministry

  • Complete Attachment 4 of the Working with Children Check and return it to the head of your ministry unit, e.g. your rector.
  • If you have leadership responsibility in ‘child-related employment’ (e.g. Scripture teacher; Youth club leader; Kids Club leader; Camp Pelican Director/leader; Lay Chaplain counselling children or young people) and will be responsible for directly supervising children (under 16 yrs) or young people (over 16 and under 18 yrs) you will need to complete Attachment 3 of the Working with Children Check and return it to the head of your ministry unit. This form requests your consent for a criminal record check.
  • Participate in a Child Protection Workshop once every three years.
  • Report reasonable suspicion of physical or sexual abuse of children and young persons.

ACT Clergy (including locum tenens and ATOs)

  • Complete Attachment 4 of the Working with Children Check and send it to the Bishop’s office (required once for the diocese).
  • Contact the Bishop’s Office for a consent form to undergo an AFP police check (required once for the diocese).
  • Participate in a Child Protection Workshop every three years.
  • Report reasonable suspicion of physical or sexual abuse of children and young persons to Family Services, DEYFS.
  • If you are the rector of a parish it is incumbent upon you and the Church Wardens to make sure that your church has a Child Protection Policy and that you keep the parish members up to date on Child Protection issues and procedures. This should be done at least annually.

ACT Children’s ministry

  • Complete the Statutory Declaration Form in which you declare that you have not been convicted of any offence against children or young people. Return the form to your rector.
  • If you have leadership responsibility in ‘child-related employment’ (e.g. Scripture teacher, Youth club leader, Kids Club leader, Camp Pelican Director/leader, Lay Chaplain, counselling children or young people) and will be responsible for directly supervising children (under 16 yrs) or young people (over 16 and under 18 yrs) you should obtain a consent form from the Bishop's Office (or your rector) to allow an AFP Police check to be undertaken.
  • Participate in a Child Protection Workshop every three years.
  • Report reasonable suspicion of physical or sexual abuse of children and young persons.
  • Those in special ministries will have been authorised by the Bishop of Canberra and Goulburn for your ministry.
